1. Be a better version of yourself – God helps those who help themselves
This is a motto that emphasizes the importance of self-initiative and agency. If we are determined enough to accomplish a certain goal, even God will be on our side. Set a vision this New Year, give it your best shot, and leave the rest, at the will of God. Remember, you are only limited to action; succeeding or failing is not in your hands.
2. Stay positive – Good thoughts and deeds lead to positive outcomes
This New Year, let’s limit ourselves to only good thoughts, thoughts that make our mind serene; no envy on anyone, and no jealousy for others’ success. Remember, your time will come. Carry out good activities, quit all those bad habits like Drinking and Smoking. Go to the gym or take up a sport or engage yourself in reading good books or watch good movies. It’s never bad to give a helping hand to the needy, too.
3. De-stress yourself – Visit places of Worship, Yoga, Meditation or Chanting
Temple, Church or Mosque – are all spiritual institutions, paying a frequent visit will certainly not cost us, anything. These places are made for our mental peace, to de-stress us, to give us clarity and to re-energize us, to carry on, with our lives. The easiest path of spiritual realization in Kali-Yuga is to chant the holy names of Lord Krishna as recommended in the Vedic scriptures. You may initially start with any other mantra as per your convenience, and then shift yourself to the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. Yoga is one solution for all our mental and bodily issues along with deep relaxation techniques of meditation – to alleviate your day-to-day stress. This New Year, make sure to add this in your New Year resolution list.
4. Uplift your spirituality – Be Charitable, Stay Compassionate
You may not be the richest, but just look around you and see those little homeless kids running around you, begging for food, you are certainly richer than them. Have compassion; be loving, wear a smile in your face, all these basics have been long forgotten by our youths. This New Year, make sure to bring back those basics and make a year more happening, spiritually enlivening and full of bliss. Charitable activities can be performed out of compassion to the poor or for the spiritual upliftment of oneself. In the Bhagavad Gita, it is recommended that one should perform charity without expecting any returns, at any time and in a place of pilgrimage or in temples, and to a worthy person (a qualified Brahmana or a Vaishnava devotee).
5. Read Bhagavad Gita, the spiritual ocean of life – Find solution for all your problems
Reading Great books helps you live a better life, Bhagavad Gita is one of them. This ancient sacred text of India is regarded universally as the prime source of spiritual knowledge and inspiration for the humankind. Spoken directly by Lord Sri Krishna to His intimate friend Arjuna. By reading Bhagavad Gita daily, you can also have intimate friendship with Krishna and have Him as a guide in your life. Make a resolution to read Bhagavad Gita daily for 10 minutes or a page.

Let’s jump back, to sticking to the New Year resolution part
God helps those who work with a stronger determination. There goes an excellent tale of a Sparrow which teaches us, if we are determined in our actions, nothing can stop us.
Once, a sparrow laid her eggs, on the shore of the ocean. The ocean carried away the eggs on its waves. The sparrow being upset, requested the ocean to return her eggs, but the ocean didn’t. So, the sparrow decided to dry up the ocean. She began to draw out the water in her small beak.
As the news of her activity spread, everyone laughed at her impossible determination, and at last Garuda, the bird carrier of Lord Vishnu heard about it. He became compassionate toward his small sister bird, and so he came to see the sparrow. Garuda was very pleased by the determination of the small sparrow, and he promised to help. Garuda at once asked the ocean to return her eggs, or he takes up the work of the sparrow. The ocean was frightened at this and returned the eggs. Thus, the sparrow became happy by the grace of Garuda.
Now, determination in bad activities or activities in harming others will, obviously, not fall under this. Good or spiritual activities are Akarma. It doesn’t produce good or bad results, instead, it goes to our spiritual account (sukriti), so when the right time comes, we can go back home, back to Godhead.
Hare Krishna!
