Smt Sudha Murty and Shri Chanchalapathi Das, Vice President, Iskcon at the inauguration of the Paduka Seva.

On the occasion of Ugadi in April 2007, ISKCON took an initiative to infuse and inculcate among the people in general the value of dignity of labor, humility and equality of all services before God.

The society is composed of different kinds of people with various skills, talents and abilities. All kinds of people have some thing to contribute to the society and all their individual contributions help in keeping the society running. There may be drivers, construction laborers, house maids, cleaners and a host of other vital, important but simple service providers. In a complex interconnected society, all of them help to make our life tick.

ISKCON wishes to sensitize public at large about respect and dignity for all kinds of services in the society by encouraging the devotees to perform the footwear services in the temple on a voluntary basis.

Humility is considered a jewel among the qualities of people. Srila Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of ISKCON explains, “humility means that one should not be anxious to have the satisfaction of being honored by others.” Paduka Seva gives an opportunity to develop and practice humility.

An opportunity is being provided to all the visitors of the temple to enroll on a voluntary basis for performing this seva for a few hours in a week. Interested devotees can register by filling in a form and dropping the same in the drop-box kept in the Temple Reception.

According to the teachings of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna accepts services of all kinds from his devotees, regardless of whether it is big or small, as per our mundane estimations. Krishna accepted the grand scale services of Pandavas in ruling an empire and with equal satisfaction the simple flat rice gift brought by the poor brahmana, Sudama.

Paduka Seva.

Krishna is really interested in seeing the bhavana or mood of devotion behind the seva.

All of these good values help to improve the quality of life in the society.

To set an example, Sri Madhu Pandit Das, President, ISKCON Temple and Smt Sudha Murty, noted writer and Chairperson of Infosys Foundation launched this program and practically performed the footwear services in the temple footwear stand.
