Akshaya Patra aims to cover 30,000 children

MYSORE: With the inauguration of a state-of-the-art kitchen on the ISKCON premises in Jayanagar here on Saturday, the Akshaya Patra Foundation aims to cover 30,000 schoolchildren in Mysore district in its mid-day meal programme.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa inaugurated the kitchen. Minister in-charge of Mysore district Shobha Karandlaje, Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda and Minister for Housing and Muzrai Krishnaiah Shetty were among those present.

After inaugurating the hi-tech facility, the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues served meals to schoolchildren.

The foundation started its operation in Mysore in August 2004. It is serving mid-day meals to nearly 8,700 children in 32 schools in and around Mysore city.

Inspired by the programme, many corporate houses and individuals have extended support to it, according to the foundation.

According to Madhu Pandit Dasa, chairman of the foundation, expansion of the kitchen in Mysore will help the foundation to cover more schoolchildren in the programme
